The European Commission has adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/803 substantially amending the list of harmonised standards for the rail system. This Decision is a step forward in promoting interoperability and accessibility of the trans-European rail network by ensuring the application of modern technical requirements.

Key points of the decision:

1. Improving accessibility

New and updated standards are being introduced laying down requirements for the design of railway rolling stock for persons with reduced mobility. This includes improvements to toilets, seating and boarding aids.

2. Technical modernisation

The Decision includes new standards for the alignment of traction power supply systems and rolling stock, as well as for the testing of electromagnetic compatibility with track circuits.

3. Updating of the list of Standart

Outdated standards are removed from the official list, replacing them with newer versions that meet current levels of technological advancement and safety requirements.

4. Transitional period

In order to allow producers and industry time to adapt to the new requirements, the Decision provides for a transitional period during which the previous standards can still be used.

This decision has a direct impact on railway equipment manufacturers and infrastructure managers throughout the European Union, ensuring a single and safe railway area for all passengers.
